Richard Monette

Besides playing more than 40 roles and directing over 40 productions at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Mr. Monette was the Festival’s longest-serving artistic director, presenting the entire canon of Shakespeare’s plays during his 14-year tenure. A recipient of the Queen’s Silver and Golden Jubilee medals and of the Eugene O’Neill Medallion, he holds honorary doctor of humanities degrees from the University of Western Ontario and the University of Windsor, and an honorary doctor of laws degree from his alma mater, Concordia University. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1998, received the Herbert Whittaker Drama Bench Award for Outstanding Contribution to Canadian Theatre in 2006, and was awarded a John Harris Fellowship by Rotary International. In 2007, in collaboration with David Prosser, the former Festival’s director of literary services, he published his memoirs, entitled This Rough Magic.
