John Murrell

One of Canada’s most frequently produced playwrights, John Murrell has had his plays translated into more than twenty languages and performed in more than thirty-five countries. They include Waiting for the Parade, Memoir, Farther West, Democracy, Taking Shakespeare, and Fat Jack Falstaff’s Last Hour. He is also an esteemed translator of theatre, including works by Sophocles, Chekhov, Ibsen, and eight plays by contemporary Quebec playwright, Carole Fréchette. Murrell was the librettist for three operas by John Estacio and one by Bramwell Tovey. He was an Officer of the Order of Canada, a member of the Alberta Order of Excellence, and a recipient of the Governor General of Canada’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.
